ECO FIGHTERS
aka ULTIMATE ECOLOGY (Jpn)
By Capcom Arcade 1994

Lovely Asian arcade flyer
- click for big scan.

Robotic flying fish are all the rage these days.

Eat my yo-yo you tree-mashing eco-scourge you.

Capcom wants you to save the Planet and safeguard the environment for future generations. By blowing things up.

Here we have what is Capcom's one and only in-house attempt at a traditional side-scrolling shoot'emup on the CPS2 JAMMA system, and their last ever example of the genre released in arcades. (I'm discounting Progear as it was actually produced by Cave rather than internally at Capcom). Luckily it's a pretty good cartoon-style shmup with beautifully rendered visuals and an interesting weapon system, and an unusual but oddly appealing environmental-themed story-line. Famously the game was the result of a Japanese competition to design an arcade game for Capcom which is not a bad prize to win at all eh folks? Presumably the winning contestant's design pitch went something like this - "Dear Capcom. Global pollution is bad. Blowing stuff up is good. I'd like to combine the two in a video-game. Do I win?" And, in a rather unlikely turn of events, he actually did.

Mmmm.. impressively pretty hand-drawn backgrounds.

So who exactly are we fighting and why? It's the Goyulk mega-corporation, man. They're turning the planet into a dread-sphere with their ecologically unsound business-practices, man. For the prosecution - Evidence item A: Rapidly dwindling level of surface vegetation coinciding with appearance of colossal buzz-saw wielding tank. Evidence item B: Distinct decline in ocean water purity near enormous ship suspiciously seen to be sporting large compliment of laser turrets, missile launchers and flame cannons. Evidence item C: Un-self-concious demonstration of the construction of ridiculous flying and submarine craft that look like fish..

Eco Fighters unashamedley pinches its weapon system lock-stock-and-barrel from SNK's
Prehistoric Isle. You have a little ship (the eponymous Eco Fighter I presume) and attached to your little ship is a pod which is the bit that you actually shoot with most of the time. This pod (which although not strictly a side-pod is still quite cool) can be rotated 360 degrees around your ship by holding down one of two pre-assigned buttons - clockwise rotation is achieved with the first button and counter-clockwise rotation with the second. The pod acts as a defensive barrier against enemy shots and enemies themslves, and can issue forth a charge shot by holding down then releasing the fire button. The pod shoots in the direction it's rotated to ie if it's above you it'll shoot up, if its below you at 45 degrees it'll shoot in that direction. Simple. It's a system vaguely reminscent of R-Type's Force pod, if rather less elegant and slightly more awkward to control, but it works well enough, with tactical defensive pod positioning being the key to lengthened survival in many levels of the game. Plus if you hold down one of the pod-rotation buttons while firing the whole contraption does a nice catherine-wheel impersonation sending bullets spiralling 360 degrees across the screen. Which is not actually that useful, come to think of it, but is definitely a bloody good laugh.

This is the level two ship boss. I think it may be slightly longer in the game to be honest but
I'll just plead artistic license and an inability to use Paint Shop properly..

Little fluffy clouds. The fattish enemy ship
top left is a weapon-carrier.

You, my son, are gonna get a right lasering..
(Fab animation on this boss by the way, the whole bottom half rotates like those saucers in 50's sci-fi movies.)

Train sub-boss with punk hair-do.

This sub-boss chucks loads of popcorn-like rocks
up in the air that rain down on your ship
giving me serious
Gradius flashbacks...

Right listen up 'cos I'm gonna tell you more about weapons. Eco Fighters gives you four to pick up for arming your main pod, and yes you can only use one at a time. Nobody ever said being an Eco-warrior was going to be easy did they? You also can pick up a secondary weapon for your main ship. Yes this is a bit confusing on paper (or VDU) but all will be revealed:

POD WEAPONS

1. Energy Ball - This is your bog-standard pod weapon and basically just shoots little..er..balls. It's charge shot is a bigger ball of energy. It's the fastest firing weapon in the game. A good all rounder.

2. Long Range Hammer - This is a slightly slow firing weapon that shoots out little mines that explode on contact with enemies. The exploding mines cause little lingering explosions that cause extra damage to tougher adversaries. It's charge shot is a sort of yo-yo attack similar to the one in
Guardian Force which is probably more amusing than it is useful. Fun though.

3. Laser Sword - A Light Sabre-style attachment for your pod. Doesn't actually fire. Doesn't have a charge attack. And is a bit difficult to use as you have to get in close for it to be effective.

4. Scatter-Bomb Foil - This is my favourite. Shoots a scatter shot (really?) and has a great homing charge shot attack which is particularly useful on bosses.

SECONDARY WEAPONS

1. Vulcan - Adds forward fire to your main ship.

2. Homing - Gives your main ship homing missiles.

3. Bomb - Gives your main ship.. oh figure it out..

So thats your hardware and it's up to you to make the best of it. Eco Fighter's isn't an overly difficult game but it can get tricky in places especially if you panic and lose control of your pod. Something best avoided then. Get the hang of basic pod-control and use it to strike a balance between defence and offence however and you'll be laughing.

Anyway best wrap up now and leave you to take a look at the screengrabs. Lovely graphic design in evidence eh? The game has a similar ultra-colourful cartoon-style to Chariot from the
Three Wonders CPS1 PCB. I do enjoy the bosses, some are several screens long or high such as the aforementioned giant ship and a later R-Type Mothership-style boss.

I was admittedly rather enamoured of Eco Fighters when I first played it in the arcade, in fact there was a local one in Bournemouth still running it in a cab until a couple of years ago when they decided to get rid of all their 2D JAMMAs, the fools. With no CPS2 emulation in MAME at the time (due to their infamous encryption) and no home conversions I ended up paying over a hundred quid for the arcade board just to play it at home. Silly Mike. Luckily now it's been included on Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 you can now play it in the comfort of your living room without the extrortion of ridiculous amounts of your hard-earned cash from fellow arcade collectors. You lucky, lucky people.. Mike

Eco Fighters' R-Type Mothership homage. Part of.
